Thattathin Marayathu Malayalam Movie Review

Thattathin Marayathu Malayalam Movie Review

Writer-director Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Thattathin Marayathu talks about an innocent love story that leaves you with a smile in the end. Not many films can boast of such a claim these days and this refreshing tale of romance turns out to be thoroughly engaging.

The story is happening in a sleepy village in Thalassery where Vinod (Nivin Pauly), an average student from a modest Hindu household falls in love with a beautiful girl named Aisha (Isha Talwar), hailing from a wealthy and influential Muslim family.

Their first real ‘meeting’ ended up literally in an accident and he was almost instantly smitten by her ample charm. Vinod and his friends try every possible way to grab her attention and to their surprise, she reciprocates the feeling, pretty easily.

Now what happens next is what the story is all about and it is told mostly with clichéd situations, melodramatic moments and smart lines but portrayed in quite a delicious way. In fact that stylish narration is the strength of the film as well. With a cute, simple storyline, which is meant to be enjoyed like of whiff of pure fresh air, the film just keeps you engaged all along, quite effectively.

Of course this one is far from perfect and at times, the events mentioned tend to defy logic as well. And the scenes towards the beginning of the second half, when the character Hamza (Bhagath Manuel) makes his entry, is a bit out of sync. But with brilliant visuals from Jomon T John, excellent music by Shaan Rahman, with a well-written script and good presentation, Vineeth takes the viewers on a romantic trail.

With a new look that makes him really handsome and younger, Nivin Pauly performs with confidence and ease. There are moments when he fumbles but this is one of the most impressive performances by a young actor during recent times, when almost the entire focus is on him.

Debutante Isha Talwar looks beautiful, but she is mainly shown through her beau’s eyes. Watch out for a brilliant show by Aju Varghese as the hero’s confidant. The rest of the cast has also come up with a nice show.

A feel good romantic film hasn’t been one of the favourite genres in Malayalam for pretty long. No surprises if Thattathin Marayathu makes you feel romantic, with its cuteness and innate honesty. Don’t miss this one!

Naughty Professor Malayalam Movie Review

Naughty Professor Malayalam Movie Review

Well, most of the viewers would perhaps expect some crazy or even naughty fun when they go for a comedy flick. But what if most of those jokes turn out to be jaded, boring or even offensive, like in director Harinarayanan’s Naughty Professor?

Like how enjoyable will it be for you to watch the sexual escapades of a 60 year old man played by veteran actor Innocent? Or the desperation of an ageing professor to turn macho? There is no way you can mince words here, this is just irresponsible filmmaking, trying to cash in on the new found acceptance for Baburaj as a comedian, but it all goes in vain.

Prof. K T Vishwambharan (Baburaj) is the department head in a college but behaves more like a silly man obsessed only about his looks and health. He is a bit too friendly with his students and the college authorities hate him for this. His wife Karthika (Lakshmi Gopalaswamy) is an ex-south Indian super heroine, who had quit acting after her marriage.

Vishwambharan is friendly with Francis Mulavarikkal (Innocent), who is nearing sixty but has nothing but sex in his mind. Things take an abrupt turn when DYSP Chacko (Tini Tom) and his wife Tessa (Lena) start living in their neighbourhood.

In an effort to come up with some laughs, director Harinarayanan and scenarist Baburaj go for every possible gags that we usually come across in films of this genre. The scenes are badly written, the dialogues are irritating and the performances are less than ordinary. The narrative loses its direction at several junctures but in all probability you would lose interest in the proceedings pretty early as this absurd drama start unfolding.

Baburaj sleepwalks through this role, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy and Tini Tom have nothing much to do, Lena is there to display her shape in tight fitting exercise outfits and Innocent tries to display his old tricks without much success.

It is evident that the makers of Naughty Professor are not much bothered about the audience. Some of those mimicry shows in TV could provide you some laughs but no such luck with this one. Now, the choice is entirely yours!

Namukku Parkkan Malayalam Movie Review

Namukku Parkkan Malayalam Movie Review

It is perhaps mandatory for every Malayali hero to play a ‘vellyettan’ (elder brother) role at some point of their career. Director Aji John’s Namukku Parkkaan has Anoop Menon playing such a character.

All the ‘branded’ features required for the role as per conventional wisdom is there in veterinary doctor Rajeevan (Anoop Menon). He is a virtuous family man, with a loving wife Renuka teacher (Meghna Raj) and two daughters. In the efforts to make his elder brother Balan (Tini Tom) and younger brother Prasad (Sudheesh) settle down, Rajeevan’s dreams to build a house gets sidelined. The whole film is about his struggle to build a house.

It is a familiar situation here too with every clichéd character that you would expect in such a storyline in attendance. The brothers who are well settled, an ailing sister who had to marry a good for nothing man, their mother suffering in the midst of all these confusions and the quintessential ‘ammavan’ (uncle), who will have an opinion about virtually anything.

It may be modeled on the TV potboilers, but the film has some nice moments as well. The script by Jayan-Sunoj is pretty good and Aji John has made it into a watchable film. Neatly written dialogues, nice visuals and good music adds to the film’s effect.

Anoop Menon, with his trademark style of dialogue delivery and casual style is impressive. He shares a good chemistry with Meghna Raj, who is also nice in her role. Among the rest of the cast, Tini Tom barely looks like Anoop’s elder brother but the others are fine.

Though it could be a spoiler, watch out for a nice show from Jayasurya, in a brief appearance. He has tried something different and this could rate among his finest performances during recent times.

Go with not much expectation and chances are that you may find ‘Namukku Parkkaan’ as a not so bad one-time watch. The decision is yours!

Usthad Hotel Malayalam Movie Review

There are certain films, which can be attractive by its inherent sincerity and excellent narration. Director Anwar Rasheed’s Ustad Hotel is such a cute little film.

Based on Manjadikkuru director Anjali Menon’s fine script, the strength of the film include Anwar’s slick making, Lokanathan’s visuals, Gopi Sundar’s enchanting music and some fine performances.

Faizi (Dulquer Salmaan) has been living with his rich dad (Siddique) and four sisters in the Gulf. He goes to Switzerland to study hotel management and before settling down in London, he comes to their native place in Kozhikode. His father wants him to marry another rich man’s daughter Sahina (Nithya Menen) and they meet. It is one of the best scenes in the film

It turns out to be quite an eventful trip for the young man, as he becomes really close to his grandfather, Kareemikka (Thilakan), who runs a modest hotel called ‘Ustad Hotel’.

His stay in Kozhikode continues for a bit longer than what he had anticipated and during his stay with his grandfather, Faizi learns some new facts about life and the world around him. He realizes that money is not just what matter in this world.

The film begins in an excellent way and things get a bit slow especially in the second half. Perhaps the preachy tone towards the climax and the shift in focus at times, like the sequences involving the band for instance, could include the film’s weak links.

Dulquer Salmaan, who made an impressive acting debut with Second Show early this year, continues with his fine form. The inimitable Thilakan is brilliant as usual. Nithya Menen, who plays Faizi’s love interest Shahana is a scream. Tamil actor Jayaprakash makes an impressive debut as the benefactor of the poor and homeless.

The highlight of the film is Dulquer’s cool dude act, Anjali Menon’s script where she has shown modern Kozhikode Muslim milieu in a realistic manner, Anwar Rasheed’s packaging and Gopi Sundar’s background score and haunting songs.

Ustad Hotel may not shock you with some thrilling plots or dramatic twists, but it is an entertaining watch that can bring smiles on your faces or at certain other instances can make your eyes moist. It could definitely have been less lengthy and more gripping, but it is worth a watch even in this form.

Bachelor Party Malayalam Movie Review

What was cinematographer and director Amal Neerad trying to say, with his latest film, Bachelor Party? Well, chances are that you may have no clues about his intentions, even after you sit in disbelief watching Padmapriya gyrate to some silly tune, as the end titles roll in a corner.

It is fine if a filmmaker decides to entertain the viewers using brilliant visuals and technical wizardry only. In fact, Amal is known for his disregard for a genuine storyline in his films, but here he seems to have gone a bit too far.

The trademark gimmicks from the director are all there. Slow motions, extreme close ups, measured silences, quirky one liners, unbelievable situations, booze, guns, blood, you name it and it’s all there.

And the curious thing here is that ‘Bachelor Party’ has largely been copied from the 2006 Hong Kong action thriller ‘Fong Juk’ or Exiled, directed by Johnnie To. Most of the sequences, including the ‘garden sequence’ outside Toni’s house, the background score, the ‘red colour’ that spreads after a gunshot and even the jewelry that Toni buys for his kid have been carefully reproduced from the original.

Johnnie To has been thanked for his influence in the titles, but then is it fine to copy someone’s film without acknowledging the fact prior to the release of the film and still using convenient terms like ‘inspiration’ or ‘filmography’ in the titles (as it happened with another celebrated film released recently)?

Toni (Asif Ali), Geevar (Indrajith), Benny (Rahman), Ayyappan (Kalabhavan Mani) and Fakeer (Vinayakan) have been childhood friends. Now, two of them are working as henchmen for a gangster named Prakash Kamath (John Vijay) and they target Toni. The other two comes to Toni’s rescue.

In fact the whole film has been set against this wafer thin premise and slick visuals are being used to make up for it. If you are really interested in such visual spectacles and lines mostly adorned with cheap expletives, chances are that the initial portions could work fine to a certain extent. But when basic logic get questioned and the patience of the viewer is tested with an overdose of stylish action, things start going from bad to worse.

Unni R and Santhosh Aechikkanam, who have been credited for writing the script, have added a few scenes to the original and stuffed with one-liners purely aimed at those who are desperate for titillation.

The actors have been stylishly presented, but they have nothing much to do on the histrionics front. Prithviraj has been wasted in a brief role of no real significance. Meanwhile Remya Nambeeshan and Padmapriya are there just for one item number each.

There is a certain madness about Bachelor Party and it has been made known through the film’s publicity materials as well. If you are fine with that, the movie can be entertaining in parts. The rest of the world, who are looking for a genuine storyline, some melodrama or logic, can stay away.

Spirit Malayalam Movie Review

In his latest film Spirit, director Ranjith has perhaps tried to give a message against alcoholism. Now, the attempts in this direction are so evident that the film ends up having a preachy tone, especially during the second half.

Reghunandanan (Mohanlal), an ex-banker and a hotshot TV show host, is in the process of writing a novel. He is a habitual drunkard, whose hands start shivering, if he is away from the bottle for awhile.

It was his excessive drinking that resultedin his divorce some years back, but he shares a healthy friendship with hisformer wife Meera (Kaniha) and her current husband Alexy (ShankarRamakrishnan). The couple has the custody of Reghu and Meera’s son Aditya akaSunny, who can’t speak or hear.

Reghu, however, is not really bothered about relationships and prefers to live life on his own terms. He rubs some of the mighty and powerful, who comes to his 'live' show, in the wrong way and never regrets it as well. But certain incidents happen in Reghu’s life that prompts him to take some crucial decisions in life.

Now, you can like this film or not, but it can’t be denied that the story here is mostly genuine and relevant. The film has some really nice moments in between, which touches your heart in a big way.

Still, the premise and the script turn out to be pretty shaky at times. In the end, it is a matured performance by Mohanlal that makes the viewer, glued on to the screens, in a big way.

The presentation of drinking as some form of an art form and the peculiar equations in relationships could be dubbed as a bold stance. But the focus of the story tends to get affected after a while and the rather meek looking adventures in the second half takes the zing away to a certain extent.

In his efforts to present a theme that not many would have dared to touch, Ranjith stamps his style in an emphatic way, not really thinking much about the usual ingredients to please the viewer. Venu's visuals are good and Shahabaz Aman's music is fine.

With his inimitable style and confidence, Mohanlal gets into the shoes of his character with remarkable brilliance. He gives a certain believability even to some of those over the top scenes and comes up with yet another memorable performance.

Shankar Ramakrishnan (the scenarist of Urumi) makes a nice debut as an actor.Kaniha looks good and watches out for a fantastic performance from Nandu, who plays a plumber. Veteran actor Madhu gets a different look, which is quite nice.

If you are not expecting a high voltage drama stuffed with the usual share of emotions, Spirit can turn out to be a nice experience. It may not bowl you over like some of Ranjith's brilliant movies and seems to be a bit too long, at nearly two hours and thirty minutes.

Still, this one has been made with noble intentions.
